AMAMONTAGNOLA UAP + JDS FINAL PROJECT

+ Montagnola

The elimination of the site’s borders is the first step to give back the area to the district.
The new raised up Ama headquarters introduce a new permeable public space with new functions that guarantee all day long temporal continuity of the activities.

The new office building of only two levels, stretches over the existing Ama building and is supported by four high pillars that contain all the vertical connections. A system of hollow patios allows direct light into the offices and lightens its view from below and creates a pleasant game of lights and shadows on the square level underneath.

The single house with garden unit usually present in the suburbs is introduced into the urban contest avoiding soil waste. The minimum house unit (60 sqm) develops and grows in height and turns into a sort of artificial hill facing South. Facilities are located on the opposite side of the artificial hill facing the new public space underneath the Ama building.

The new Montagnola Boulevard is designed as a linear square. It is the heart of the district and like a mirror reflects the existing activities, the surrounding environment and urban identity elements. That is made possible through a careful use of public space tools: it is foreseen to use abandoned areas with all day long overlapping activities to obtain a more lively district life; it is foreseen to encourage local "slow" mobility (pedestrian and bicycle); introduce soil permeability, green alleys and a pedestrian continuity.

Such continuity is obtained by reversing the vehicle/pedestrian relationship and by introducing a phisical link from the housing to the main district facilities. Sidewalks and paved areas near public facilities are treated with patterns as an urban signal.
